What is nephrology?

Nephrology is the study of kidney disease:
the kidney filters wastes and unwanted chemicals.
The kidney is also essential in regulating blood pressure, red cells and bone health. 

Common kidney conditions include

  • Haematuria – blood in the urine
  • Proteinuria – protein in the urine
  • Kidney impairment – acute/sudden or chronic/slow (chronic kidney disease)
  • High blood pressure
  • Anaemia
  • High Potassium

Some common causes of chronic kidney disease

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Vascular Disease
  • Cysts in the kidneys
  • Reflux nephropathy
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Medications
